I also used the magic resistance trait to determine the 'trading value' of saves (see below). I added 12 to the effective save for monsters with the magic resistance trait. Note - I encourage others to check my work, as save data is readily available. However the final pattern is intuitive: monsters gain +3 to their summative Dex, Con, and Wis saves for every 1-point-increase in DC. D&D has even taken steps to move away from assigning ability score bonuses based on race, thereby eliminating some of the disadvantages that once plagued these creatures. These creatures are just as intelligent and social as the more traditional races, so there's no reason not to include them on equal footing with the rest of the party. The so-called 'monster races' include creatures traditionally used as antagonists in D&D campaigns. As long as the Dungeon Master approves, there's no reason to stick to just the basic races.
